Supervisor's Roles and Responsibilities

The Supervisor’s duties and responsibilities include serving as chairperson of the Township Board, moderator of any Township meeting and has the right and duty to regulate the proceedings of any meeting, including deciding questions of order, making declaration of votes cast, granting authority to persons to speak at the meeting and silencing those who may be out of order or disrupting the meeting.

The Supervisor is the chief assessing officer of the Township, responsible for assessing property values within the Township. In Gerrish Township, the Assessing services have been contracted out and the Supervisor collaborates with that contractor to provide the necessary level of service required by statute.

Brian A. Hill was appointed to fulfill the role of the previous Gerrish Township Supervisor who resigned at the end of March 2024. He was appointed with the effective start date of April 1, 2024. Brian recently retired as the Gerrish Township Police Chief where he spent a total of 42 years (1982-2024) in Law Enforcement (all in Gerrish Township) to include 12 years as a road patrol officer, 12 years as  a Sergeant and the with the last 18 years as Chief of Police.

Brian has a wealth of Government and non-profit Board service and experience. Brian spent 12 years on the Roscommon Area School Board where he served 2 years as a trustee, 8 years as Treasurer and 2 years as President before stepping down to pass on the opportunity to others for current ideas and a fresh perspective. Additionally, he served on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police representing 619 agencies in Michigan from 2009-2014 and also served as its President from 2012-2013. Brian served on the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police Legislative Committee from 2014- 2024 analyzing bills on behalf of the organization to form postures for the profession on proposed legislation. In the Non-Profit area, Brian was a founding member and an original by-law author for the Advisory Community  Team-Neighbors on Watch (ACT-NOW) organization which operates out of the Gerrish Township Police Department. It has an Executive Board of Directors that teamed up with the Police Department to provide benevolent projects in the Roscommon County Community. He served as an advisory member to that board from its inception in 1999 until retirement in 2024.

Additionally, Brian serves on the Board of Directors for the Northern Michigan Children’s Assessment Center (NMCAC)  which provides forensic interviews, counseling and therapy to victims of Child Abuse and Neglect. He is currently the Chairperson of the board and is going into his fourth year of a 6-year commitment. To date, he has been the sitting Chair of the Board. Finally, he has served on many County level Committees including the 911 Technical Advisory Committee where he had served for over 20 years. Brian also served on the Local  Emergency Planning Team Committee for many years and was a Law Enforcement Representative for the Roscommon County Emergency Operations Center in the event of an activation.
