Duties

The Clerk is elected every four years at the same time as the United States President and serves as one of the five voting members of the Township Board. The statutory duties of the clerk are numerous, technical and legally essential to the proper operation of municipal government.

  • Maintains the custody of all township records
  • Maintains the general ledger
  • Prepares all warrants for township checks
  • Records and maintains township meeting minutes
  • Keeps the township book of oaths
  • Prepares special meeting notices
  • Publishes board meeting minutes
  • Maintains voter registration file & conducts all elections
  • Updates and maintains the township ordinance book
  • Prepares financial statements
  • Must appoint a deputy clerk
  • Must post a surety bond

Photo Identification Required When Voting

Due to a recent Michigan Supreme Court ruling regarding a Michigan law passed in 1996, all voters are now required to show photo identification when voting at the polls.  The requirement became effective with the November 2007 election.

Voters must comply with the requirement by showing photo identification or signing an affidavit attesting that he or she is not in possession of picture identification. 

Accepted forms of photo identification are:

  • Drivers License or personal identification card
  • Federal or State government issued photo identification
  • United States Passport
  • Military ID with photo
  • Student identification with photo from a high school or accredited institution of
    higher learning
  • Tribal identification card with photo
    The photo identification requirement does not apply to persons voting by
    absentee ballot. Voters who do not have a photo ID and want one can get a state identification
    card at their local Secretary of State branch office for $10.  State ID cards are
    free to individuals who are 65 or older, blind, or who have had their driving
    privileges terminated due to a physical or mental condition.  Proof of identity and
    residency is required when applying for a State ID card.

Absent Voter Ballots

All registered voters in Michigan have the right to vote by mail using an absentee ballot delivered to their home. Voters can also request an absentee ballot directly from their local clerk’s office. Absentee ballots are available beginning 40 days prior to every election.

Michigan voters can now join the permanent absentee ballot list by checking a box on the application to automatically receive an absentee ballot for every election.
